I bet you want your kids to do lots of reading this summer! Summer reading is the best way to help kids maintain their academic progress and what better way to keep them reading than one of the series from this diverse summer reading list for 7-10 year olds. I love putting a great series in the hands of an independent reader. Once your 7-10 year old falls in love with the characters in one of the books on this list he or she will beg to go to the library for more.
All of the books on this list of diverse summer reading books have a summer or vacation theme so kids will immediately be able to relate to experiences of the protagonists no matter how different each of their lives are.

Alvin Ho: Allergic to Camping, Hiking, and Other Natural Disasters (series) by Leonore Look. This is the 2nd book in an early chapter book series about 2nd grader Alvin Ho and his struggle to overcome his various fears. Alvin’s adventures coming to terms with his family camping experience are sweet and funny.
Starring Grace (series)by Mary Hoffman. Summer is the perfect time for Grace and her friends to have some wonderful, imaginative adventures right in her own backyard. This is a solid early chapter book about the heroine of the much loved picture book, Amazing Grace.
How Tía Lola Saved the Summer (series)by Julia Alvarez. This is the only book in Alvarez’s praised Tía Lola series that I have read, but I am eager to read more. A single father and his three daughters are coming to stay with Miguel’s family for a week during the summer. Miguel is not looking forward to the visit, but Tía Lola manages to make everything magical with her insight and understanding.
The Buried Bones Mystery (series) by Sharon Draper. It’s summer, and four boys who call themselves the “Black Dinosaurs”, build a clubhouse, decode secret messages and solve mysteries. that kids will like. There’s a bit of humor, appealing characters and, of course, some mystery
Julian’s Glorious Summer (series)by Ann Cameron. Julian’s friend Gloria gets a brand new bike! But Julian is fearful of learning how to ride. He doesn’t want to admit this to his friend, but the lie he makes up gets him into bigger trouble. A great series!
Lulu and the Dog from the Sea (series) by Hilary McKay. Animal-loving Lulu goes on vacation to the beach with her parents and cousin Millie. During their stay a stray dog inserts itself into their lives. It is Lulu who can look past the dog’s mischief and makes a new canine friend.
Summer Showers (series) by Kate Hannigan. Willow and Delia’s grandmother gives them each a special heirloom but Willow can’t find hers and worries it might have gotten lost in the cupcake batter. The cousins use their recipes to solve the mystery! (A sweet book — pun intended — and a great for advanced readers in this age group.)
(series) Lola Levine and the Vacation Dream by Monica Brown. I think this series about half-Peruvian, half-Jewish Lola. In this installment, Lola goes on vacation to Peru to visit her Aunt Lola.
Sam and Charlie (and Sam Too) at Camp! (series) by Leslie Kimmelman. Sam and Charlie head off to Jewish summer camp for the first time. Charlie’s little sister Sam (too) is not old enough to go with them this time, though. While at camp the friends learn about the shomrei adamah and Jewish tradition of taking care of the earth.
