Game of the Month: Skippity

Skippity Game for Kids

You may recognize Skippity as the game I used for my Games Gift Guide photo. It’s made by one of my favorite game companies, Mindware. It is  a variation of checkers, but much more fun. In fact, checkers is one of the few games I don’t like, but I love Skippity.

Players take turns collecting pieces by skipping over one or more chips. Unlike checkers, pieces on the playing board do not belong to any one player — until they are skipped, that is! Anyone can skip any piece. Skippity uses strategic thinking skills because the object is not just to collect as many chips as possible, but to collect complete sets of colors.

Special Considerations:

  • This is an easy game to understand. Children as young as 5 can easily play. Older 4s may be able to play as well.

Tips for Playing with Preschoolers and Toddlers at the Table:

  • Skippity is a great game for preschoolers to set up. Colored chips are matched to their corresponding square. New Kid loves to practice his 1-to-1 correspondence skills.
  • Preschoolers can also help skip chips with some adult direction. Count skips aloud for pre-math skills practice.
  • Toddlers can play with chips on the side after they have been captured. Of course, only the adult players will be willing to give up their chips. 8 year old boys will never want to relinquish chips to a younger brothers!
  • Toddlers can use the board and chips work on color recognition.

  5. I’ll keep this in mind for in case my kids EVER start playing board games. They toyed with the idea for about two weeks, and haven’t gone back.
