Rock Collecting and Books for Kids who Love Rocks

I love how rocks fascinate my kids. Explore and collecting rocks is such a simple way to connect with nature, and yet children never seem to tire of it. Every kid is a natural geologist!

Collecting rocks and reading children's books about rocks

When we walk home through the park Kiddo and New Kid always have to stop at what they have named “The “Rock Place.” They gather handfuls of rocks (actually just large gravel) and then hurl them over the nearby “cliff” (actually just a hill).

Exploring nature and throwing rocks over the hill

The best part, which has nothing to do with geology? I even get to sit down on a big rock while they search for little rocks.

Are your kids fascinated by rocks, too?

Some of our favorite fiction and non-fiction rock books:

Incredibly gorgeous illustrations in A Rock Is Lively take kids on a journey through the mineral kingdom. Also available as an ebook.

If You Find a Rock is a wonderful, poetic celebration of all kinds of rocks. Beautiful photographs will get your kids anxious to get out rock hunting again.

Let’s Go Rock Collecting will insert a bit of science learning into your kid’s rock obsession.

Introduce the science of rocks with Rocks: Hard, Soft, Smooth, and Rough.

National Geographic Kids Everything Rocks and Minerals: Dazzling gems of photos and info that will rock your world will satisfy every little rock collector with tons and tons of information and photographs.

If Rocks Could Sing: A Discovered Alphabet is a rather amazing alphabet with rocks that are naturally shaped like letters!

Kids who love rocks will love these books.

my girls often come home from school with their pockets full of rocks! Treasures they say…. but it seems rocks and kids just go together!

My kids are – especially Johnny!

One of our neighbors has a gravel driveway, and he would bring that entire driveway home if he could! He's transporting it home, little by little, on our walks =)

Absolutely! No rock in the neighborhood is safe, and the small rocks in our backyard are in constant motion 🙂

Rock collecting is such a fun activity. My sons love to collect rocks as well as shells, as shells are more in ample supply here than rocks.
    Enjoyed your post…

    Happy Tuesday!

I have buckets and buckets of rocks. I'm not sure what the fascination is, but man they love rocks. Most are what I call “parking lot rocks” and I gradually get them back outdoors. The others we have scattered around the garden. Maybe we'll have to start finding a safe place to throw them too.

Yep, and like yours, just as fascinated with throwing them!

Leaves are the collecting article of choice here. I don't know how many times after Kinder Princess has pulled off her shoes, tipped them upside down, and out hasa fallen a grden full of leaves. “I collected these for you, Mumma!”

I now have a nice collection in a tub in the kitchen, waiting for some crafting to be done 🙂

Thank you for this list of rock books! I’m planning a geology unit for my kids soon and I just put nearly all the books you listed on hold at our library.
