Advent calendars come in all shapes and sizes. At our house we love advent calendars! You can find everything from simple lift-the-flap versions to expensive creations based on niche interests. This printable Christmas carol picture puzzle advent calendar is simple, free and provides a few minutes of brain-boosting entertainment every morning with your kids.
How the puzzles work
Each puzzle contains a picture or selection of pictures that represents the title of a Christmas carol or popular Christmas song. For example, if you see a picture of a frosty window pane and a snowman, you might guess, "Frosty the Snowman." Or, if you see a thunderbolt, a bed, a smiling face and a couple of men, you might guess, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." (Neither of these are answers, by the way!)
Your success in solving each puzzle may depend on your knowledge of Christmas songs, but we only included well-known songs that kids everywhere might be singing. So never fear, "As with Gladness Men of Old" isn't one of them. Whew.
TIP: Not all the words in a song title will always be represented in the puzzle. Think of the pictures as clues, rather than an exact cipher. For example, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" might be represented by a night sky and a clear drinking glass. (Not an answer, by the way!)
How to set up the picture puzzle advent calendar
Print out the advent calendar picture puzzle printable. You will need to enter your email in the form directly beneath this sentence.
The printable includes 24 sections. Cut each section out on the red lines and fold each of the 24 puzzles in half so no one can peek!
Place the puzzles in a jar or envelope. If you have a reusable advent calendar with pockets or drawers, place a puzzle in each pocket!
Every day, remove a puzzle from your chosen receptacle and put your heads together to solve!
Don't forget to lead your kids in a rousing rendition of the Christmas song of the day!
