If you have read Mermaids on Parade (and if you haven’t you will now!) you will know about the King and Queen of the Sea! Kiddo used his dolls to walk along the Coney Island map in the book! He cracks me up.

Print these out on card stock to color and cut out for paper dolls. Play with them at home, take them on the road, to the restaurant and to their favorite place: the beach (sunscreen not included).

Mermaids on Parade is Melanie’s signature book about a girl attending her first Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The Mermaid Parade is an annual costume parade that has taken place every June since 1983. Crowds of New Yorkers, young and old, dress up as sea creatures, both real and imaginary, march along the boardwalk and throw fruit into the sea. (Hey, every carnival has its quirks.)

Mermaids on Parade is one of my kids’ favorite NYC books. (It was also a Cool Mom Pick, a Red Tricycle Perfect Picture Book, one of Bank Street College of Education’s 2009 Best Books of the Year,  and a PBS Summer Reading pick, so I’m not just whistling Dixie.) We have read it a million times. (Yes, a million. I never exaggerate.)
