Some of you may be familiar with the book Where is the Green Sheep? If you haven’t read this particular book a gazillion times as we have, you have most likely read another book by Mem Fox who has herself written a gazillion picture books (The Magic Hat, being another favorite). So when I saw that the New Victory Theatre had brought the Seattle Children’s Theatre production of Where is the Green Sheep? to New York I knew I had to take Kiddo. I was a little skeptical at first because we had seen a lot of really painful but free theatre for kids this summer. I am a bit of a theatre snob and it is hard for me to deal with mediocrity.
Well… It was a fantastic show with great production values and better yet, Kiddo was mesmerized. Not once did he ask me his favorite question: “When are we going to leave?” If it didn’t cost me $40 I would take him everyday. It was staged in a sort of reverse theatre-in-the-round situation so the audience was in the…er… sheep pen, if you will, and the action took place all around us. It is a bit tricky for a pregnant lady to keep twisting, but the kids didn’t mind. Kiddo was smiling the entire time and I was also appreciative that even the 1 year-olds were attentive. That is some quality theatre, people.
