July 27, 2010

DIY Word Find Game Remember Sift n Spell? A few weeks later ended up dumping a handful of letters and numbers in the bucket and put it on the shelf to make his own work find for kids! Kiddo took it out on his own and started digging around in the rice to spell words….

Writing Practice for Kids: Taking Notes

May 13, 2010

Practice handwriting by taking notes just like Jack in Magic Tree House!

Kiddo has been very motivated to practice his handwriting skills lately. This mostly takes the form of self-directed learning because he is the kind of kid who loves busy work. (I should get him to fill out all the forms sitting on my desk.) If you are familiar with Jack and Annie from The Magic…

Writing Practice Busy Work: Categorizing

May 5, 2010

Kids can practice writing with categorization activities

My 5  year old loves to practice writing! His penchant for busy work led to this self-motivated categorizing writing activity.  I didn’t have anything to do with this idea, he decided to do it all himself. I know it’s sort of hard to believe, I’m not making this stuff up, people!  He decided to write…

Spelling Game for Kids: Sift ‘n’ Spell

December 2, 2009

Fun Spelling game for kids

A rainy afternoon meant we needed a fun indoor project so I set up this spelling game and literacy activity for Kiddo at the table. Literacy and Spelling Game My son loves to spell (at Thanksgiving dinner I cracked up when he clarified a misunderstanding, “No Grandma, food, F-O-O-D!”). He even takes over the living room…

¿Cómo se dice…?

October 15, 2009

Bath Time Activity: Ice Fishing

August 11, 2009

This is something I used to do all the time last year because the surprise factor helped Kiddo get in the tub when he was going through an “I hate baths!” phase. It’s really easy… just freeze some small toys in a plastic container. When you put it in the bath, the ice slowly melts…

Simple Spelling Practice Activity

January 15, 2009

Spelling practice without fancy games or worksheets

My son is really into spelling right now. He likes to ask me how to spell words. I think it’s because spelling is a system that he can figure out. Learning how sounds make words is an important step in his literacy progression, so I encourage it as much as possible. Finding ways to parent…

Storytelling: Lost Art or Housekeeping Aid?

April 20, 2008

Storytelling as housekeeping and parenting trick

Back when books were a luxury, children were entertained by storytelling. I have discovered that storytelling is one of the key tools in my arsenal as a Stay at Home Mom. Benefits of Storytelling: Today so many of us (me included) rely on picture books and forget that we can tell stories with words alone. Storytelling encourages…
