Science Activities for Kids

Science activities for kids that are easy to do at home.

My kids love learning with simple science experiments. Scientific explorations teaches kids patience, encourages curiosity and is also just a lot of fun!

Most of our science projects are easy to do at home, with common household materials. We have ideas for toddlers and tweens and everyone in between. You will find everything from plant science, to chemical reactions, to harnessing the power of electricity. There is something for every interest and skill level.

Peruse our archive of ideas or see a list on our Giant List of Indoor Activities for Kids.

Plant Science Activity with Kids

Plant science activity to do at home with kids

Since we have no yard, much of the kids’ gardening learning happens indoors. Right now the boys and I are learning a little plant science by observing pots of various beans and seeds growing in the window. Despite the fact that I am an avid gardener, I’m embarrassed to say that it continues to be…

December 22, 2013

Science learning activities for afterschool

Next to math, science is my older kid’s favorite subject. After school science learning activities are a good way to nourish his interests. But the thing about doing projects after school is that they have to be super low prep. After all, kids’ brains are not at full power in those late afternoon and evening hours. As…

July 24, 2013

easy phonics learning

My kids never tire of playing with magnets. Magnets are magic to really young kids but they don’t lose their appeal for older kids either.  Even my 8 year old likes to explore the push and pull power of strong magnets. 10 Fun Bubble Activities for Kids

July 12, 2012

Bubble activities for kids. Ideas to keep summer fun interesting.

My 3 year old loves bubbles. It is one of the few things I can bring to the park and am guaranteed that he will join in the fun instead of running away (thus making me chase him all over the place — argh!). Since bubbles are such a fun way to spend time outside…

5 Ways to Play With Ice this Summer

June 21, 2012

Play with ice and cool down this summer. Number 5 is fun!

It’s summer. It’s hot. In fact, today the weather icon on my computer is a thermometer ON FIRE. It’s tempting to stay inside with the air conditioner on full blast. But parents know it’s not fun to stay cooped up inside with active children. Instead, stay cool outside by playing with ice.* Stay Cool this…

Tracking the Weather with Kids

February 22, 2012

In November Kiddo tracked the daily high and low temperatures on a piece of graph paper. This was fun for him since he is so loves numbers and all things weather-related. He liked studying the graph everyday while he ate (it hung and the wall near the table). I think if we do this again,…

Kitchen Magic

March 16, 2011

Kiddo has declined helping me with the cooking recently. I think it has to do with the fact that his little brother also wants to join us, thus starting a cascade effect of pushing, fighting, and general whining mayhem. When that starts up,  I am perfectly happy to work by myself, thank you very much….
