Although our DIY summer science camp has been primarily hands on, and we are a mostly screen-free home, I thought I’d let you in on a little secret. Sometimes we watch a few educational science videos for kids on YouTube! Obviously I am a great advocate of books, and we simply adore the monthly do…

Science Activities for Kids
My kids love learning with simple science experiments. Scientific explorations teaches kids patience, encourages curiosity and is also just a lot of fun!
Most of our science projects are easy to do at home, with common household materials. We have ideas for toddlers and tweens and everyone in between. You will find everything from plant science, to chemical reactions, to harnessing the power of electricity. There is something for every interest and skill level.
Peruse our archive of ideas or see a list on our Giant List of Indoor Activities for Kids.
The Pulley: Simple Machine Project
Engineering is a big part of science, so a simple machine project with my 5 year old was the perfect addition to our DIY summer science camp. I had originally planned an afternoon of building with a bag full of goodies to inspire tinkering, but it turned into a playful session with a pulley. What…

DIY Simple Kids’ Science Lab
Summer science camp continues with a simple at home science lab that I set up one afternoon to keep my 5 year old busy. This idea is perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners but even older kids will love to explore the chemistry of mixing different household items they find in the kitchen. The idea behind…

Leak Proof Bag Science Experiment
I knew this leak proof bag science experiment with the kids was a project that would have a high fun factor since the kids LOVE anything that includes water play. Since it is such a simple science project it was the perfect addition to our DIY summer science camp with Coffee Cups and Crayons. I wanted to do the…

Blast Off with An Amazing Balloon Rocket Experiment
Years ago, my older son and I raced balloon rockets across our living room. This year, for summer science camp we took our balloon rocket making supplies over to a friend’s apartment to try outdoors with the kids. As you can imagine, a balloon rocket experiment was lots of fun for three very rowdy boys….

Map Science with a Homemade Compass
If there’s one thing my older son adores (besides birds), it is maps. Mapping and geography are passions of his so I knew he would love to learn how to make a homemade compass for the super simple summer science camp we are doing with Coffee Cups and Crayons (see below for the activities so far). I…

Solar Oven S’mores {Summer Science Camp}
Welcome to week 2 of DIY summer science camp. Just like last week there is a slight element of failure, but that’s all part of the process, right? That’s what I tell myself anyway. Whenever we go on vacation and have access to some sort of yard, we make s’mores. I know you can make them in…

How Failure Teaches Kids to Think Like Scientists
This inaugural summer science camp post was supposed to show you how to do a simple science project with your kids: how to lift an ice cube with a string. It has all the great characteristics of an easy experiment: it’s quick, there are no fancy materials, there is a not-too-obvious explanation, etc. However… it turned into…

Home Science Experiments for Kids
We have been doing easy at home science experiments since my oldest son was three years old. Even if your child is too young to understand all the underlying concepts, introducing simple science projects at home and after school will lay a good foundation for learning in later years. Plus, at the very least, these…

More Plant Science: Regrowing Vegetables from Scraps
Observing how some vegetables magically regrow from scraps is a fascinating plant science project you can do at home with the kids even if you don’t have a yard! The boys and I are watching a few items regrow (or not, in one case) in our small window greenhouse. I remember growing vegetables from scraps…
