What Do We Do All Day

Books and Activities for Kids

Science Activities for Kids

Science activities for kids that are easy to do at home.

My kids love learning with simple science experiments. Scientific explorations teaches kids patience, encourages curiosity and is also just a lot of fun!

Most of our science projects are easy to do at home, with common household materials. We have ideas for toddlers and tweens and everyone in between. You will find everything from plant science, to chemical reactions, to harnessing the power of electricity. There is something for every interest and skill level.

Peruse our archive of ideas or see a list on our Giant List of Indoor Activities for Kids.

Water Refraction Science Experiment

August 12, 2015

This water refraction science experiment has such a “wow factor” and is so quick and easy I can’t believe my kids and I haven’t done it before. It would fit right in with our DIY science camp series, too. Best of all, there is almost no set up, but once I showed it to the…

Explore and Create: Science Art Projects

Find dozens of science art projects for kids

Participating in the STEAM Power Camp series this year has given me a new found appreciation for the marriage of science and art. As you know, I have a special appreciation for math art, but I haven’t always thought of science and art in that way. Well, no more! The artistic beauty of science is…

Spinning Noise Maker (Science of Sound)

July 10, 2015

Science experiment for kids. How to make a spinning noise maker.

It’s the final week of STEAM summer camp and we are exploring the world of SOUND today. Since I knew my boys would take delight in making a toy that they could use to annoy one another, a buzzing, spinning noise maker seemed like the perfect science project. But don’t let my kids’ sibling rivalry deter you! These…

How to make ice cream in a bag

When you think of summer treats, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Ice cream, of course!!! A fantastic old school summer activity is making ice cream in a bag! When I was a kid we had this huge electric ice cream maker that we set out in the back yard and filled it…

Science Craft for Kids: Milk Carton Candles

June 19, 2015

Scented milk carton candle science project with kids.

It’s the third week of S.T.E.A.M. Summer Camp and this week the theme is the sense of smell. Truth be told, I had a bit of trouble coming up with something for this theme. I had another idea that didn’t work out, but never mind, because as I explained in last year’s DIY Summer Science Camp, failure…

Old School Fun: Make a Thaumatrope

June 6, 2015

How to make a thaumatrope

Have you ever made a thaumatrope? It’s an easy way to combine science learning with a bit of craftiness for STEAM fun.  I’m a pushover for old school DIY toys, especially the ones I remember making when I was a kid. A thaumatrope is a groovy, optical toy that teaches kids about “persistence of vision”….

All You Need for a DIY Summer Science Camp

May 1, 2015

DIY science camp for kids

Last summer the boys and I created our own DIY summer science camp. It was very casual and so simple, and the boys always asked, “What are we going to try this week?” Every week, we did a new science experiment and shared them in collaboration with Megan at Coffee Cups and Crayons. For your…

Superhero Science Activities: Test Your Powers!

March 17, 2015

Superhero science activities for kids. Match an experiment to a superhero.

My boys love superheroes and I love doing science experiments with the kids so superhero science activities are a match made in heaven. I must admit I feel a bit snobby about comic books, but I try to keep my feelings under wraps. Instead, I harness the boys’ (especially my youngest son, who is obsessed with superheroes)…

Super Duper Simple Circuit Science Project

March 10, 2015

Easy circuit science project perfect for first graders and kindergarteners

This simple circuit science project is perfect for kindergarteners and first graders, but my 10 year old enjoyed it, too.  It is so easy, but still produced a little spark of “wow”. (Like that pun I got in there? “spark”.. electric circuit project… ???…sigh) Experimenting with simple science projects at home is a good way to…

Inertia Zoom Ball: Super Fun S.T.E.A.M. Project!

March 3, 2015

Inertia Zoom Ball science project for kids.

Have you ever heard of an inertia zoom ball? Yeah, me neither! When researching the theme “react” for this week’s S.T.E.A.M. based project (did you see our diy indoor boomerangs last week?) I happened across this activity. It looked exactly like something my boys would enjoy doing. Plus, let’s face it, anything with the words “zoom” and…
