My 5 year old loves to practice writing! His penchant for busy work led to this self-motivated categorizing writing activity. I didn’t have anything to do with this idea, he decided to do it all himself.
I know it’s sort of hard to believe, I’m not making this stuff up, people! He decided to write lists of all the dinosaurs he knows and categorize them by the age in which they lived. He got out some toys to help him in this endeavor.
This is a fun idea for kids who like to make lists or to organize, but it’s not for everyone. My son particularly likes sorting tasks like this. I wouldn’t force kids to do this if they aren’t interested. After all, we want kids to enjoy writing.
You don’t have to use dinosaurs, of course. Kids can pick their favorite objects and organize them according to whatever taxonomy they wish.
A few ideas to tempt your little writer:
- toy vehicles by function
- toy animals by habitat
- play food by food group
- super heros by uniform color
Wondering about the oddly shaped outlines? They are treasure chests, of course. (I know, I had to ask him too.)
