Neighborhood Find of the Week: So, you know how you sometimes see shoes tied together and tossed across an overhead street cable? Some lovely person tossed up a pair of hearts. It’s irrational how much affection I have for this person’s act. What a great statement.
Parenting Links of the Week:
I decided to keep Kiddo in the dark about the events in Sandy Hook and they have not been discussed in his classroom, but if your child has heard the news and is expressing anxiety here are a few links with information you might find useful.
- Going Back to School from the Child Mind Institute
- Building Resistance in Children in the Face of Fear and Tragedy from the NYU Child Study Center
- Play Dr Mom has a round-up of Thoughts and Resources in the Face of Tragedy
- To my post on Monday about using picture books to help children I added School Library Journal’s Why Did It Happen? Books to Help Kids Cope with Tragedy
Books of the Week:
Mom: Can’t tell you! Super awesome new book list series project for the new year in progress!!!!

I love the hearts too- people (including me) should do things like that more often- random acts of beauty. We kept Claire in the dark about Sandy Hook too- I didn’t see the point of bringing it up with her. Can’t wait to hear about the new book list project!
I think you’ll like the new books lists. It’s a little crazy that I’m making them. These book posts are taking longer and longer to write.
I also didn’t tell my kids. I was warned that they might hear it from other kids but I lucked out and they didn’t. I didn’t see the need to bring it up when they might never learn about it.
I Agree!
Isn’t Zero the Hero a lovely book? Can’t wait for you to share your secret in 2013. Merry Christmas!
Yes, loved it. I thought the roman numeral plot device was hilarious!
