Looking for a Good Game for Your Kids?

Great Games for Kids

I finally did it.

I put together a gift guide for games. My friends all know how cuckoo for games I am and regularly ask me for recommendations. When we go to birthday parties we usually bring a game (or a book!).

So in addition to my game of the month posts, this blog now has a handy-dandy comprehensive game guide. On this list I have suggestions for games for kids of all ages. It includes games for preschoolers, games for building math skills, strategic games and games for trivia lovers and my #1 game recommendation.

Take a look. What do you think? Are there any additional types of games you’d like to see included? What is your kid’s favorite game? Leave a comment and tell us. I’m always looking for new games.

  1. Your game guide is awesome. Thanks for posting it! I need to make some gift guides – if I find the time.

Thanks MaryAnne, it was fun to make and I always feel so flattered when people take my suggestions. Games make such great gifts.

Thank you so much! I just added almost all of these to our wish list. Thanks to your post I bought Qwirkle for Tatum as a “last day of school” gift this year and we all love playing (except for the three year old, he is in charge of handing out new tiles:). Tatum received Rush Hour from one of my husband’s former students and she was addicted right away.

  3. We LOVE the card game Blink. Great for my 4 and 6 year old (and my husband and I have been known to play a few rounds after the kids are asleep). The only drawback for us is that it is limited to 2 players.

  4. We love games, too, esp. me! My kids love Rush Hour Jr. and so do I. (I’m hoping to get the deluxe adult edition for Chanukah…). My kids sometimes even play it cooperatively – they each take a turn moving a piece, an approach they came up with on their own! I also highly recommend Mastermind. We have Mastermind for Kids and they have “mastered” it so I bought the regular one for Chanukah. A friend in Hong Kong told me they have toy libraries there – I wish we had that here! Like you, I have limited space and would love to make sure a game is hit before buying it. Recommendations like yours are the next best thing. Do you know anything about Castle Logix, Blokus or Sequence? Thanks!

    • Mom and Kiddo says:

Yes, my 7 year old LOVES Mastermind, which reminds me of being a kid because I loved it growing up. We do have Castle Logix, which the boys played together today! I’ve never played Blokus but it is on my wish list for Hanukkah/Christmas this year and we’ve played Sequence many times at others’ homes. I think there are a lot of versions of Sequence, some are geared towards young children.

  5. We love playing games here too. We like Bananagrams, there are lots of other games like this with fruit names it is this one that we have, Winter a co-operative game and the games made the company Orchard Toys we have What’s Rubbish, Bus Stop and a French bingo game. Will have to look up some of the one’s you have recommended thank you for sharing.

    • Mom and Kiddo says:

Thanks for those suggestions, I’ve only heard of Bananagrams (and Bingo, of course) but I’ve actually never played it. I will have to correct that oversight.

  6. Great list! I’ve got some new ideas. Right now, our family is into Yahtzee. Even my 6 year old loves it and it’s really helped with my daughter’s math – 3 dice showing 6, what’s 3 x 6? My kids also love playing Guess Who? and that one is great for deduction skills – Are you a girl? Do you have brown hair? Are you wearing glasses? etc… They love those two games.

  7. Great guide. Some of the games are our favorite too. We have Rush Hour on iPod, so I hesitate to get a tactile version of it. Scrambled States is probably one thing that I want to add to our Christmas list (Anna has “new games” on hers).
