Sunday I took Kiddo to one of my favorite places: The New Victory Theater. We saw the amazing Bai Xi from Cirque Shanghai (Click over to watch a video of them in action).
On our way to the theater we stopped by to see the Macy’s windows. I love to see the holiday windows. Lord & Taylor’s are always my favorite, but Macy’s was on our way today.
I was disappointed to see that the long-standing Miracle on 34th Street windows have been replaced by a more cartoon-y “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.”
The facade is still a sight. I’m loathe to step inside Macy’s since it’s such a nuthouse, and looking at it from the outside, with all it’s windows, one can’t help but wonder what a lovely shopping experience it could be if they opened them all up. Instead it just feels like another airless crush. Too bad.
After the show we went on a wild goose chase to a no-longer-in-existence Lionel pop-up train store, so Kiddo could get his fix watch the trains. Along the way we passed this man making crazy-good music on empty bins, a frying pan and some metal bars. We were not the only passers-by who were impressed.
Amazingly, I snagged this photo of Santa making the rounds under the Rockefeller Center Tree. I used to work just next to Rockefeller Center so it’s funny to walk by and see an area that is so familiar but I now hardly ever visit. The crowds were insane.
In my brain, this is a classic image of NYC life: subway steam, policeman directing traffic, massive crowds, taxi… The fact that it was out in front of Saks was just perfect.
As compensation for the now-defunct Lionel Train Store, I took Kiddo on a tour of the Lego store, which was crazed with people. They had all of these wonderful little dioramas to gaze at. Jessica @ OSM, you should never go here.

I'm so sad to hear the Miracle on 34th St. windows have been replaced. I hope they bring them back next year. Perhaps we should start a letter-writing campaign. It's my favorite Christmas movie.
What great pictures! One of my favorite childhood Christmas memories was the time my parents took us into Paris (we lived about 45 minutes out) to see the window displays on the Champs-Elysees. Amazing! I imagine the NYC windows are a similar experience. That is sad that they took out the Miracle on 34th Street windows.
Wish I could have heard that guy with his music – sounds fantastic!
GREAT photo of Santa skating–awesome!
I am also sad to see the Yes, Virginia window.
I have photos of a Muppets-themed window from (I think) Macy's back in the 1990s…my then-boyfriend took me to NYC to see Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic. He was an idiot, but I'll always treasure seeing Phantom–ha, ha.
And thanks for the tip on the Lego store…yet, you KNOW I'll end up it (or probably the one in Philly) some day!
I really want to play along. I took pictures all weekend and have the post formatted in my head. Just need more hours in my day/weekend. We've been snotty nosed all week {CRANKY baby} and my body needs sleep more than blogging.
I love the first picture of the puppet show…made me swoon.
Next week I'll play along….this week I'm having camera challenges
