5 Great Picture Books About Snow

kid books about snowThings have been slow around here. I know a lot of folks like to ratchet up their activity levels in December with all sorts of crafts and holiday-themed activities. I don’t do this because — for me — the frenzy interferes with the enjoyment of it all.

However, we still read tons of books and I purposely search out snow-themed books, one of my favorite genres. Snow-themed books are an entire genre, right?  Try some of my favorites, next time you head out to the library in 2 feet of…. nothing (sigh).

An onomatopoeic snow poem.
Snowflakes wisely head towards one of the greatest cities for Christmas: New York.
If you wish it, it will come.
I love a subtle touch of absurdity in my picture books.
I mentioned this book last week, and it’s worth mentioning again, it is so wonderful.

There are other snow books we love, of course, but this will get you started. What snow books do you love?

  1. I will make note of this list – hoping to read some snow books in January. We enjoyed Snowflake Bentley this year. Thanks for joining WMCIR!

  2. We just got Red Sled out of the library today – haven't read it yet, though! I'll have to look for these others. The only other snow book I can think of is “Snowmen at Night”, which is lovely.

  3. We like Snow by Manja Stojic. Her book Rain is good, too. There is also an old book, White Snow, Bright Snow, I think, that we like.

  4. Hi there, the snow books look great. We are almost in summer over here on the other side of the planet, so snow is just in our imagination, so these books will be great for my little G (16months) when we want to explain what its like in other parts of the world. Thanks for joining the blog hop and see you in the blogosphere, cheers Julie

  5. The Red Sled is such a classic – we love that one! My kids also really loved the Little Snowflake. Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving Day. Thanks for linking into the Kid Lit Blog Hop. Cheers!

  6. I have to say, instead of snow books, I love to look at the snowpeople created by Calvin in the Calvin and Hobbes comic strips! They are my absolute favorite. Bill Waterson cracks me up :)

Thanks for linking in to the Kid Lit Blog Hop!

  7. I can’t think of one, but I’ll be sure to look for some the next time we’re at the library. We’re fairly new up north and just getting used to the whole snow thing, but what better way than to read about it in books!
